Know your pest

Two kinds of ants, two different problems.

These are two of the most common ant problems in Seattle-area homes, and they need different fixes.

  • Sugar ants (odorous house ants)

Tiny brown-to-black ants, about 1/16 inch long, that march in lines to food. They don’t damage the house, but they’re some of the hardest ants to get rid of.

  • Carpenter ants

Big black ants that nest in damp or damaged wood. Colonies can reach tens of thousands, and over time they can damage the wood in your home.

  • Signs of sugar ants

Lines of tiny ants along counters, floors and window sills, most of all in spring and summer.

  • Signs of carpenter ants

Piles of fine, sawdust-like shavings near wood, and winged ants inside in spring.

How we handle it

Three steps. The last one is the fun one.

  1. We find the source

We follow the trails and check for damp wood, so we treat where the ants live, not just where you see them.

  2. A price, then the work

You get a written price before we start. If they come back within 30 days, so do we, free.

  3. Take your putt, if you want it

After your visit, take one putt. Sink it and win a free year: four visits on us.

Do it yourself

What you can do today.

  • Wipe the trails

Ants follow scent trails. Wiping them with soapy water breaks the line for a while.

  • Seal the food

Keep sweets, pet food and crumbs in sealed containers.

  • Fix the drips

Carpenter ants need wet wood. Fixing leaks and replacing rotted wood takes away their home.

  • Skip the spray

Spraying the ants you see rarely reaches the nest, so they keep coming back.

Questions

Good to know.

  • Do store-bought ant baits work?

Sometimes, for sugar ants. Store-bought baits usually don’t work well on carpenter ants, so those are worth a call.

  • Are carpenter ants the same as termites?

No. Termites eat wood. Carpenter ants dig through it to make room for their nest. Both can cause damage, so it’s worth a look.
