These are some of the spiders most often found in and around Seattle-area homes.

Giant house spiders
Big, fast and brown, with bodies up to about an inch long. Common in garages and basements west of the Cascades. Their bite isn’t known to harm people.
Fall wanderers
From late August into November, male giant house spiders roam, looking for mates. That’s when you see them in the open.
Cellar spiders
Long, thin legs and loose, messy webs in corners, basements and garages.
Orb weavers outside
Big round webs around porch lights, eaves and gardens, most of all in late summer and fall.

Questions

Is it a hobo spider?
Probably not. In the Puget Sound area, giant house spiders outnumber hobo spiders, and the two are often mixed up.
Are house spiders dangerous?
The ones you’re most likely to see aren’t. The giant house spider’s bite isn’t known to harm people.
